# AI marketing agents compared

The short answer

An AI marketing agent is software that does marketing tasks for you, such as reading reports, drafting ads or changing campaigns. They differ most in three things: what they can see, what they are allowed to change, and who is responsible when something goes wrong. Compare them on those three, not on the length of the feature list. Start with read-only access and keep a person approving anything that spends money.

## The kinds on offer

The phrase covers very different products. Sorting them first makes comparing them much easier.

### Chat assistants

General tools you ask questions of. They can explain a report or draft copy, but only see what you paste in, and they change nothing themselves.

### Workflow automations

Fixed rules that run on a schedule, such as pausing an ad when cost passes a limit. Predictable, but they only do what someone set up.

### Agents that act in your accounts

Software connected to your ad accounts that reads results and makes changes. The most useful kind, and the one that needs the most care.

### Managed services that use AI

A team and software together. The software does the repetitive work, and people set it up, check it and answer for it.

## What to compare

### What it can see

Does it read your real sales and leads, or only what the ad platforms report? An agent working from short data will make confident decisions on a false picture.

### What it is allowed to change

Can it only suggest, or can it edit budgets, pause ads and launch campaigns? Narrower permissions are safer, especially at the start.

### Who approves

Ask where a person signs off, and who that person is. Spend should not move without someone you can name agreeing to it.

### Who is responsible

When it makes a mistake, who notices, and who puts it right? A tool you run yourself leaves that with you.

### How you check its work

You should be able to see what it did and why, in plain words, after the event.

Judge it on its limits, not its list of features.

An agent that is clear about what it will not do is easier to trust than one that says it can do everything.

## Questions to ask before you connect anything

Can it start with read-only access to our ad accounts? Which actions can it take without a person approving them? Where does it get its sales and lead figures from? How will we see a record of every change it makes? Who do we speak to when something looks wrong, and how fast do they answer? What happens to our data and access if we stop using it? Is the cost fixed, or does it move with our ad spend?

Anyone selling you an agent should be able to answer all of these plainly. If they cannot, that is worth knowing before you connect it.

## Where Crank OS fits

Crank OS is a managed service, not an agent you run yourself. It puts tracking in place, builds dashboards, watches your results every day, makes ads and builds campaigns. Ads are sent to you to approve, and campaigns are handed over paused for your media team to switch on. The [comparison page](/crank-os/compare) sets it beside the other ways of getting this work done, and [how it works](/crank-os/how-it-works) shows the steps.

If you are weighing a person against a service, the guide on [an analyst or a managed service](/insights/analyst-vs-managed-service) covers that choice.

## Questions

### Will an AI marketing agent replace my agency?

It can take on repetitive work, such as reporting and drafting. Someone still has to decide what to test, check the numbers are right and answer for the result.

### Is it safe to give an agent access to my ad accounts?

It can be, if you start with read-only access, limit what it may change and keep a person approving spend. Check who can see the record of its changes.

### Do I need clean tracking first?

Yes. An agent can only be as right as the sales and leads it is told about. Sort the tracking first, or it will optimise towards a false picture.

### Is Crank OS an AI agent?

Crank OS is a managed service. Software does the repetitive work, and the Crank team sets it up, checks it and stays responsible for it.
