# Creative fatigue in Meta ads

The short answer

Creative fatigue is when an ad that worked stops working because the same people have seen it too many times. The signs are frequency climbing while click rate falls and cost per result rises, with nothing else changed. There is no universal number, so compare each ad with its own first week. Check at ad level, not campaign level, and keep replacements ready so you can swap rather than stop.

## What it is, and what it is not

An ad has tired when it did well at first, then worsened over time with nothing about the ad itself changing. The audience's response changed.

### It is not a bad ad

An ad that never did well did not tire. It just did not work, and it needs a different fix.

### It is not the same as running out of audience

If you have already reached nearly everyone in a small audience, any ad will tire. A new ad can help a tired one, but only wider targeting helps a small audience.

An ad does not switch itself off because it has tired. It keeps spending while the campaign is running and the budget allows.

## The signs

### Frequency goes up

Frequency is the average number of times each person has seen the ad. A steady rise means the same people are seeing it again and again.

### Click rate goes down

Fewer of the people who see the ad click on it.

### Cost per result goes up

The same budget buys fewer sales or leads.

### Fewer people watch a video past the first seconds

For video, the opening stops holding attention.

### Comments change

People write things like 'I keep seeing this'. A few are worth reading even when the figures look fine.

Look for the pattern, not one number.

Two or three signs moving the wrong way together is a clearer warning than any one of them.

## How to check

Open Ads Manager at ad level, not campaign or ad set. Compare each ad's last week with its own first week. Add frequency, click rate, cost per result and results to the columns. For video, add three-second plays. Flag any ad where two or more of these have moved the wrong way. Check whether the ad is still above your return floor, the lowest return you will accept. Read the latest comments.

How often to look depends on spend. The more you spend on a small audience, the faster an ad tires, so look more often.

## What to do about it

### Swap the opening

If the idea is still sound, a new first few seconds or a new headline can bring it back.

### Replace the ad

If the idea has run its course, retire it and bring in a new one.

### Do not wait

A tired ad keeps spending, so act when the signs are clear, not at the next monthly review.

### Keep replacements ready

A few ads made and approved, but not yet live, mean a tired ad is swapped, not simply stopped. See the guide on [video ads from creator footage](/insights/crank-os/video-ads-from-creator-footage).

## Seeing it early

The [creative dashboard](/crank-os/dashboards/creative) in Crank OS judges every ad only against ads with the same job, and lists the best and the worst, with the biggest spend at the top of the worst list. The [daily digest](/crank-os/daily-alerts) flags ads that have dropped below your return floor, and suggests an approved ad to swap in.

## Questions

### How long does an ad last?

It depends on the size of the audience, the spend and the ad. Compare each ad with its own first week instead of using a fixed number of days.

### Is high frequency always a problem?

No. Some audiences, such as people who have already added to their basket, can take more repeats. It is the pattern that matters: frequency rising while results fall.

### Should I turn off a tired ad, or refresh it?

If a new opening could fix it, try that first. If the idea itself has run its course, replace it.

### Does Crank OS make the replacement ads?

Yes. Crank OS makes video and image ads, scores them, and sends each to you to approve. Your media team switches them on.
