# Image ad sizes for Meta and Google

The short answer

Make every image ad in four shapes: square (1:1), tall (4:5), full screen (9:16) and wide (1.91:1). Build the square first, keep text and logos away from the edges, and rebuild for each shape instead of stretching. Uploaded Google banners must be 150 kilobytes or smaller; Performance Max images can be up to 5 megabytes. Sizes change, so check Meta's and Google's current guides before a large launch.

## Meta: sizes by placement

| Placement | Shape | Size in pixels |
| --------------------------- | ------------------ | -------------- |
| Facebook and Instagram feed | Square (1:1) | 1080 by 1080 |
| Facebook and Instagram feed | Tall (4:5) | 1080 by 1350 |
| Stories and Reels | Full screen (9:16) | 1080 by 1920 |

Use .jpg or .png files. For full-screen ads, keep text, logos and faces clear of the platform's own buttons and captions. A safe rule is to leave the top 14 percent, the bottom 35 percent and about 6 percent at each side empty. That covers Reels, which is the tightest, and Stories is looser.

Meta's guides show their own safe areas, and Ads Manager previews show how an ad will look in each placement. Meta's figures change, so check Meta's current guide before you finish artwork.

## Google: sizes by campaign type

Performance Max and other campaigns that mix your pictures into different layouts take image assets. Google asks for three shapes.

| Shape | Recommended size in pixels | Smallest allowed |
| ------------- | -------------------------- | ---------------- |
| Wide (1.91:1) | 1200 by 628 | 600 by 314 |
| Square (1:1) | 1200 by 1200 | 300 by 300 |
| Tall (4:5) | 960 by 1200 | 480 by 600 |

Upload these as .jpg or .png files, up to 5 megabytes each. If you run uploaded display banners instead, each banner is a fixed size, and the file must be 150 kilobytes or smaller. The most common sizes are below.

| Banner shape | Sizes in pixels |
| ------------ | -------------------------------- |
| Rectangle | 300 by 250, 336 by 280 |
| Wide banner | 728 by 90, 970 by 90, 970 by 250 |
| Tall banner | 160 by 600, 300 by 600 |
| Mobile | 320 by 50, 320 by 100 |

Uploaded banners can be .gif, .jpg or .png. Google lists more sizes than these, so check its current list for the placements you want.

## Make them once, in this order

### 1\. Square first

Design at 1080 by 1080 with a clear margin all round. Keep the main subject in the middle, so it survives every crop.

### 2\. Tall (4:5)

Extend the canvas upwards and downwards, and reposition. Do not stretch.

### 3\. Full screen (9:16)

Rebuild, do not crop. Extend the background and move text and logos inside the safe areas.

### 4\. Wide (1.91:1)

Rebuild for Google's wide shape at 1200 by 628, moving the subject and text to suit.

### 5\. Export and name

Export in screen colours, not the print colour mode, and name files with the campaign, shape and version, so you can tell what is live.

Colours, fonts and logos can drift apart across sizes until one looks like another brand. Put the finished set side by side before you upload.

## Check before you upload

The pixel size matches the placement exactly. The file is a .jpg or .png, and under the limit: 150 kilobytes for uploaded banners, 5 megabytes for Performance Max. Text is readable at phone size, and nothing important sits near the edges. For full-screen ads, nothing important sits inside the safe areas. The set matches: same colours, fonts, logo and message in every shape.

Image ads in Crank OS are made again for each placement size, with copy inside the limits, and resizes and versions come at no extra charge. See [ad production](/crank-os/ad-production).

## Questions

### Do I need all of these sizes?

For Meta, square, tall and full screen cover the main placements. For Google you need wide, square and tall for Performance Max, plus fixed banners if you run uploaded display ads.

### Why will my banner not upload?

Check the file size first. Uploaded banners must be 150 kilobytes or smaller.

### Can I stretch one image to fit every shape?

It is better not to. Stretching distorts the picture, and cropping can cut off the headline or logo. Rebuild each shape from the same design.

### Do these sizes change?

Yes. Platforms update their guides, so check the current ones before a large launch.
