# Landing pages that convert ad clicks

The short answer

A landing page converts when it does one job, says what the ad promised, loads quickly on a phone and passes the click's details on to your tracking. Most pages that fail do so before anyone reads a word: the page does not match the ad, asks for five things at once, or loses the campaign details, so you cannot tell what worked.

## Five things an ad landing page needs

### 1\. One job

Pick one action: buy, book or enquire. Every extra link gives someone a reason to leave.

### 2\. A match with the ad

The headline, the offer and the picture should look like the ad. If the ad shows one product and one offer, the page should open on that product and that offer.

### 3\. Quick and clear on a phone

Many ad clicks come from phones. Open the page on one, on mobile data, and see whether the main message and the button appear without scrolling.

### 4\. Proof near the action

Real reviews, delivery and returns, or a clear explanation of what happens next, placed close to the button.

### 5\. Tracking that works

The page passes the campaign details to your tracking, and the form or checkout sends the result back, so you can see which ads made which sales or leads.

## Where pages usually go wrong

A strong ad with a page that does not match is paid traffic going nowhere.

The click is paid for whether or not the page works.

### The ad goes to the homepage

The homepage has many jobs. A shopper who clicked on one product has to find it again.

### A template with nothing changed

A page that could be about anything reads as if it is about nothing. Use the words and pictures from the ad.

### The form loses the campaign

If the lead arrives in your records without the campaign it came from, you cannot trace a sale or a deal back to the ad. See [HubSpot ad lead tracking](/crank-os/tracking/hubspot-ad-lead-tracking).

### Every form fill counts as a win

If spam or the wrong form counts as a conversion, the ad platform learns to find more of the same.

## A ten-minute check

Open the page from the live ad itself, not from your homepage, on a phone. Read the ad, then the page. Do the headline and offer say the same thing? Count the links that lead away from the page. Remove any that are not needed. Send a test lead or place a test order, and see what you see afterwards. Check the lead or order arrives in your records with the campaign attached. Check that the page's claims are ones you can support, and that they match the ad's.

The last point is one of the things the [free scan](/crank-os/free-scan) looks at: ad claims, checkout steps, and pages your ads open.

## Building it yourself, or having it built

Crank OS builds landing pages as part of ad production. Each is a working page, live on your site, not a design file: concept, copy, design and code, wired to your forms and tracking. HubSpot is supported today, with Shopify to follow. Each page is scored for quality from click to conversion, and you approve it before it goes live.

Landing pages are priced per page. See [ad production](/crank-os/ad-production) for how they fit with ads and campaign builds.

## Questions

### Should every ad have its own page?

Not every ad. Give a page to each offer or audience that is different enough that the homepage would be a poor match.

### How do I know which page is working?

Compare results by page, using tracking that records the campaign with each lead or sale. Without that, pages cannot be told apart.

### Does Crank OS build pages in Shopify?

HubSpot today, with Shopify to follow.

### Does Crank OS run the ads that send people to the page?

No. Your media team runs the campaigns. Crank OS never buys your media.
