# What is a marketing operating system?

The short answer

A marketing operating system is one connected set of tracking, reporting, alerts, ads and campaign builds, so your marketing runs from one set of numbers instead of five tools that disagree. It is not another reporting tool, and it does not buy your media. Crank OS is a managed version: one Crank team sets it up, reads it every day and builds the work, and your media team keeps running the campaigns.

## The problem it solves

Most teams already have the tools. The tools just do not talk to each other, and the problems feed one another, so fixing one tool rarely fixes anything.

### You cannot tell what worked

One platform gives you the last click, another gives you views, and your own records match neither. Budget drifts to the channels that look good in a report, not the ones doing the work.

### Plans and results never meet

The plan is made in one place, the campaigns run in another and the results land in a third. Nobody can see how what was planned became what happened.

### Numbers without context

Copying figures from several platforms into a weekly report is not measuring. Without your goals, your costs and last period beside them, big decisions rest on half the picture.

### You find out too late

By the time the data is cleaned and reviewed, more budget has gone on something that was not working.

## The four layers

A marketing operating system is built in layers, each resting on the one beneath it. Crank OS has four.

### 1\. Tracking

Records every sale or lead at the source, so the figures start out right. For shops that means [server-side tracking](/crank-os/tracking/server-side-tracking-setup) and a healthy product feed. For B2B teams it means every ad lead carrying its campaign into HubSpot.

### 2\. Dashboards and daily alerts

Live dashboards for sales, spend, creative and audience, with a [daily to-do list](/crank-os/daily-alerts) written by an operator and sent to Slack, WhatsApp or email.

### 3\. Ad production

Video edits, image ads in every size, brand films and live landing pages, each checked against your brand and scored. [See ad production](/crank-os/ad-production).

### 4\. Campaign builds

Campaigns built in Meta and Google from ads already scored, always left paused for your media team to switch on. [See campaign builds](/crank-os/campaign-builds).

The order matters. Alerts without clean data are noise, and creative without measurement cannot be scored.

## What it is not

Crank OS never buys your media.

Your media team keeps running the campaigns. We earn nothing more when you spend more, so what you see is an independent read.

### Not software you have to drive

Marketing software leaves the installing, the daily reading, the creative and the campaign builds to your team. A managed operating system does that work for you.

### Not an agency that runs your media

An agency usually runs your media and reports its own results. A managed operating system builds and measures, and leaves the running to your media team.

### Not a one-off report

It reads your accounts every morning, so a new problem reaches your team the next day, not at the end of the month.

## Do you need one?

Tick off what sounds like you.

My ad platforms, my agency's report and my own sales records show three different totals. Our tracking was set up once and nobody has checked it since. Ads, landing pages and campaigns are made by different suppliers who never see the results. The plan lives in one document and the results in another. Nobody looks at the numbers every day.

If most of these are true, start with something free. Shops can run the [free scan](/crank-os/free-scan). B2B teams can ask for the [free companies report](/crank-os/free-companies-report). The findings are yours whether or not you go ahead.

## Questions

### Is a marketing operating system the same as a dashboard?

No. A dashboard shows figures. An operating system also puts the tracking in, writes the daily to-do list, makes the ads and builds the campaigns. The dashboards are one layer of four.

### Does Crank OS run my campaigns?

No. It builds campaigns paused, and your media team switches them on and runs them. Crank OS never buys your media.

### What does it cost?

Intelligence, which is the dashboards and daily alerts, is from £3,500 a month. Content, which is production and campaign builds, is from £6,250\. The whole thing is from £8,750, plus a one-off £2,500 onboarding fee. All prices exclude value added tax. See [pricing](/crank-os/pricing).

### How long does it take to start?

Access is the first step. Tracking is typically live within days of access, and in the first fortnight you get dashboards your team can open and the first daily digest. [How it works](/crank-os/how-it-works) sets it out.
