# A creative testing framework for Meta ads

The short answer

A creative test compares ads that differ in one thing, so you can say what made the difference. Pick one idea, change only that, run the ads to the same audience and objective, and agree before you start what result means keep, stop or retest. Write the result down. A test with no decision rule and no record only produces a winner you cannot explain.

## Why most tests teach nothing

Most tests fail before they start. Four ads are launched with a different picture, headline and offer in each. One does better, and nobody knows which change did it.

### Too many changes at once

If the picture, words and offer all differ, the result cannot be pinned on any of them.

### Different audiences

An ad shown to people who already know you will beat one shown to strangers, whatever the creative.

### No rule for deciding

Without a rule written down first, the result gets read to suit whoever is looking.

### Nothing recorded

A winner nobody can explain is hard to repeat, and the same test gets run again in six months.

## The framework

### 1\. Start with a question

For example: does opening on the customer's problem beat opening on the product? One question per test.

### 2\. Change one thing

Test the idea first, then the opening, then the format, then the details. Keep everything else the same.

### 3\. Hold the rest steady

Same audience, same objective, same budget per ad, same landing page.

### 4\. Make ads of equal quality

A rushed ad against a polished one tests production, not the idea.

### 5\. Run for the time you agreed

Do not stop at the first good day. Leave the test running for the period you set.

### 6\. Judge, then write it down

Apply the rule, record what you learned, then plan the next question.

One question, one change.

A small test you can explain is worth more than a large one you cannot.

## Deciding in advance

Before launch, write down what you will measure and what each outcome means. Pick the result that matches the ad's job: sales, return, leads or cost per lead.

What is the one measure we judge on? What is the lowest return or highest cost we will accept? This is your return floor. How long will the test run before we look? What do we do if the ad wins, loses or ties? Who makes the call?

Compare each ad only with ads that have the same job. A retargeting ad and a prospecting ad are not rivals. The [creative dashboard](/crank-os/dashboards/creative) in Crank OS judges every ad only against ads with the same job, on the same channel.

## Keeping a record

A simple table is enough. One row per test.

### The question

What you were trying to find out.

### What changed

The one thing that differed between the ads.

### The result

Which ad won on the agreed measure, and by how much.

### What you do next

The follow-up test, or the change to your regular ads.

## Making it routine

Testing works best as a steady habit, with new ads ready as old ones wear out. Winning ads tire, so [watch for creative fatigue](/insights/creative-fatigue-meta-ads) and keep replacements ready. Crank OS [makes the ads](/crank-os/ad-production), scores them and sends each to you to approve, so there is always something new to test.

## Questions

### How many ads should I test at once?

As few as the question needs. Two or three ads that differ in one thing give a clearer answer than ten that differ in many.

### How long should a test run?

Long enough to reach the amount of results you agreed before the start. Agree the period up front rather than stopping when one ad leads.

### Should I test the idea or the details first?

The idea. A better headline will not save an idea people do not respond to.

### What if two ads tie?

Treat it as a finding: the change did not matter. Move on to a bigger difference.
