# Google Shopping for Shopify

The short answer

Google Shopping shows your products, with a picture and price, when people search for them. For a Shopify shop you connect your store to Google Merchant Centre, send your products as a feed, fix anything Google rejects, then turn on free listings and, when you are ready, paid Shopping or Performance Max campaigns. Most problems come from the feed, so check it first and keep checking it.

## The order to do it in

Doing these in order saves most of the usual back and forth.

### 1\. Set up Google Merchant Centre

This is where Google holds your shop details and products. Add your business details, verify and claim your website.

### 2\. Connect Shopify

Link your shop to Merchant Centre so products flow through as a feed, instead of being uploaded by hand.

### 3\. Add shipping and returns

Google wants delivery costs and return terms for the countries you sell to. Missing details can hold products back.

### 4\. Check the products

Look at what Google has accepted and what it has not, before you spend anything.

### 5\. Turn on free listings

Products can appear without paying for the click. It costs nothing, so do it early.

### 6\. Add paid campaigns

Link Google Ads and build Shopping or Performance Max once the feed is clean.

## What the feed needs

The feed is the list of your products that Google reads. Weak product details mean weak ads, and missing ones mean no ads.

A clear title that says what the product is, not only the brand name. A price and currency that match the product page. In the UK, the price includes VAT. A stock status that matches the page, so shoppers do not click through to sold-out products. A good photo on a plain background, with nothing laid over it. A barcode (GTIN) where the product has one, and the brand name. A product category and, for clothing, details such as colour, size and gender.

The feed decides what can show.

A product Google has rejected cannot appear, however well the campaign is built.

## Free listings and paid ads

Free listings put your products in Google's Shopping results without a bid. Paid Shopping and Performance Max campaigns pay for a click and reach many more searches. Use the same feed for both, so a fix in one place helps in the other.

A paid campaign built on a rejected or poor feed spends money on the products that work least. That is why the order above puts the feed before the campaign. Crank OS builds [Google campaigns](/crank-os/campaign-builds/google-ads) from a checked feed and hands them over paused.

## When products are rejected

### Mismatch with the product page

Price or stock on the feed does not match the page. Update the feed or the page, and make sure they refresh often enough to stay in step.

### Missing details

A barcode, brand or category is missing. Add it in Shopify, or in the product data the connection reads.

### Image problems

Text over the picture, a logo covering the product or an image that is too small.

### Website problems

Google could not verify the website, or missing delivery and returns pages. Fix these once and they stop affecting every product.

Merchant Centre lists each problem against the products it affects. Fix the ones that stop products showing before the ones that only weaken the ad.

## Keeping it working

A feed that was clean in March can be broken by an app update, a price change or a new collection by June. A weekly look catches this early. The Crank OS [product feed check](/crank-os/tracking/product-feed) grades the feed every week, lists what to fix first and shows the ad spend sitting on broken products. The [shopping funnel dashboard](/crank-os/dashboards/shopping-funnel) shows where shoppers drop out after the click.

## Questions

### Do I need Google Ads to use Google Shopping?

No. Free listings need only Merchant Centre. You need Google Ads to run paid Shopping or Performance Max campaigns.

### How long does approval take?

It varies. Check Merchant Centre for the status, and fix any problems it lists rather than waiting.

### Why are only some of my products showing?

Some are probably rejected or limited. Open the issues list in Merchant Centre and check the reasons for the missing ones.

### Should I use Shopping or Performance Max?

Both use the feed. Start with whichever your team can read and manage, and compare them on return, not on clicks.
