# LinkedIn leads not tracking in HubSpot

The short answer

LinkedIn leads go missing in HubSpot for a few common reasons: the form is not connected, the campaign details are not passed through, consent settings block the tracking, or the contact is matched to an older record. Submit a test lead, then follow it from the ad to the HubSpot record and see where the campaign is lost. Fix the first break you find, then test again.

## Two different problems

Check which one you have first. They have different fixes.

### The lead never arrives

LinkedIn shows leads, but HubSpot does not have them. The connection between the two is the likely cause.

### The lead arrives without its campaign

The contact is in HubSpot, but its source says direct, unknown or offline. The campaign was lost on the way.

The second is easy to miss, because the lead count looks fine. Marketing sees a good month of leads, while sales cannot say which campaign any deal came from.

## The usual causes

### The lead form is not connected

LinkedIn's own lead forms keep leads in LinkedIn until they are connected to your CRM. Check the connection is on, and that it covers the right forms.

### Campaign details are not passed through

For forms on your own site, the campaign has to travel with the visitor, usually in the link, and be stored in hidden fields on the form.

### The link has lost its details

A redirect, a link shortener or a page that rewrites the address can strip the campaign off before the form is reached.

### Consent settings block the tracking

If visitors decline cookies, the tracking code may not run, and the visit has no source.

### A form that is not tracked

A form embedded in a way HubSpot cannot see, or on another domain, may not be recorded.

### The contact already existed

If the person is already in HubSpot, the older record keeps its original source, and the new campaign is not recorded.

A lead that shows in LinkedIn but not in HubSpot is not a lead you can follow.

Until the campaign travels with the lead, the ad platform counts leads and HubSpot knows which became deals, and the two never meet.

## How to find the break

Click one of your own LinkedIn ads from a clean browser window. Fill in the form with a test name and an email address you control. Look for the address bar after the click: does the link still carry the campaign details? Find the new contact in HubSpot. Is it there, and how soon? Open the contact. Do the source and the campaign fields show LinkedIn and the right campaign? Repeat once with cookies declined, and once with an email already in HubSpot.

Whichever step first goes wrong is where the chain breaks. Fix that one, then run the test again, because there can be more than one.

## What to do about it

### Connect or reconnect the form

Turn on the CRM connection for lead forms, and check each form is covered.

### Add the campaign to the link

Use one naming pattern for every campaign, so the name is readable in HubSpot.

### Store it on the form

Add hidden fields so the campaign is saved onto the contact with the form fill.

### Check the consent set-up

Decide how visits without consent are handled, and know what share of your leads it affects.

### Do not count every form fill as a win

Tell the ad platforms about the leads that became meetings or opportunities, not every form submission.

## Keeping it working

This breaks quietly. A new form, a redesign or a changed link can stop the campaign travelling, and nothing warns you. Crank OS sets up [HubSpot ad lead tracking](/crank-os/tracking/hubspot-ad-lead-tracking) so every ad lead carries its campaign, tests it with real leads and keeps it working. The [pipeline dashboard](/crank-os/dashboards/pipeline) then shows meetings and qualified opportunities by campaign.

## Questions

### Why does HubSpot show some LinkedIn leads as direct?

The campaign details did not reach HubSpot with the visit or the form, so HubSpot had no source to record.

### Do LinkedIn's own lead forms and website forms need different fixes?

Yes. The first needs the connection to the CRM. The second needs the campaign passed through the link and stored on the form.

### Why do leads in LinkedIn and HubSpot not match?

Some leads may not have reached HubSpot, duplicates may have merged into older records, and the two count at different moments.

### Can I fix old leads?

Sometimes. If you have the campaign in LinkedIn, you can match it back by email. Test the process on a few records first.
